RIDING THE WAVES

When: 10 August 2019

Where: King Tut’s

Support: Edwin Organ; Sunstinger

Band Previously Seen: 8/6/19 supporting Doves at SWG3 Galvanizer’s Yard

I saw Man Of Moon supporting Doves in the open space of SWG3’s Galvanizer’s Yard and they made a positive impression ON ME and the other punters – an unexpected extra pleasure for the day. And so I was glad to see them turn up at King Tut’s just a couple of months later.

And they again turned on the power and control to enthral tonight’s crowd. The nme said that one of their songs, ‘Skin’ (brilliantly delivered tonight), channelled both New Order and Nine Inch Nails and you can see what they meant. Their songs cross boundaries – most have a foundation in a heavier rock sound but also weave in hypnotic beats and textures, there is a touch of post rock in Chris Bainbridge’s guitar playing, a smidgeon of psychedelia, Mikey Reid’s drumming at times is pure kosmische Musik.

One of the most impressive things about the dynamic duo is the way they effortlessly blend all their different influences into a seamless, fluid series of songs. Some of the crowd stand enthralled by the technical ability of the two, some punch the air at the heavier rock bits, whilst others are entranced into dancing.

Among the highlights of tonight’s set are ‘Ride The Waves’, ‘Skin’ and a new track (‘Rust’?) from their forthcoming album. The two former songs are on their EP Chemicals which I like but both songs are best experienced live. And did I mention that Chris has a great singing voice?

The show was a visual treat as well as sonic one. The back projections really added to the experience of the gig and they were supplemented by the excellent lighting.
