The Hug & Pint

The Hug & Pint is possibly best known for its great Asian vegan food (was on The Herald’s list of ‘Best Scottish Restaurants 2016’ and if you go to a gig here you really should sample their well-priced wares. They also have a good selection of craft beers. Their love of music is encapsulated in their name – inspired by Arab Straps’ ‘Monday at the Hug and Pint – and for such a small venue (the 100 capacity would be very cosy) they do get a very interesting selection of bands.

Located on the Great Western Road – just outside the city centre and on the way to Glasgow’s West End. From the city centre it is about 25 minute walk but easier to catch a bus (or take subway – get off at St George’s Cross). Walk straight in and Just past the main bar is a door which leads down to the basement venue. The ‘box office’ is normally at top of the stairs.

The basement venue itself is very small and the stage barely raised. It is usually standing but when GG went to see a poorly attended gig there they put out tables for us to sit at (and presumably to make it look fuller for the band). The basement has a small bar but this is not always open. The merchandise table is to the right of the stage. GG has only been to a couple of gigs here so far and neither was anywhere near capacity but even so be careful not to drift to the right (facing the stage) as a pillar partially blocks the view of the stage. The atmosphere is fine – and upstairs in main bar it is very friendly and relaxing.
