Eugene Kelly was a pivotal member of The Vaselines who disbanded before their first album appeared but who were then made world famous by dint of being one of Kurt Cobain’s favourite groups and three of whose songs Nirvana recorded. Eugene has since played in a reformed The Vaselines, Captain America (renamed Eugenius for trademark reasons) and recorded as a solo artist.

Tonight it is just Eugene, his guitar and his wonderful songs, playing to a fairly crowded basement in The Hug & Pint. He seems relaxed and affable, feelings reciprocated by the crowd, and he gets more than a few laughs with some of his comments. The set includes songs from The Vaselines, Eugenius and his solo work. The stripped back performance allowed the drollness and poignancy of Eugene’s lyrics to come to the fore.

He said he’d tried to re-write his solo offering ‘I’m Done With Drugs’ as ‘I’m Done With Trump’ but then decided it was better to ignore the orange menace, only then to have to re-start the song twice as he started with the lyric ‘I’m Done With Trump’! Among the set’s highlights were ‘I Hate The 80s’, ‘You’re Having My Sex’, ‘Jesus Doesn’t Want Me For A Sunbeam’, and ‘Son Of A Gun’ but all the songs were a pleasure to hear.

A great way to start the week – in the company of a great songwriter playing and singing in a relaxed and friendly manner in front of an appreciative and happy crowd.
