POST HARDCORE FOR YOUR MUM

Where: King Tut’s
When: 16 January 2018
Support: Take Today; Painting Rockets; Brothers

Another evening which is part of the ‘King Tut’s New Year’s Revolution 2018’ where the venue showcases the Scotland’s best emerging artists’ over 16 days. Again, there are 4 bands. And again, the crowd, other than a small core, changes with each band as family and friends turn up to support just their guys – so Painting Rockets get the biggest crowd while the headliners get the smallest (although it includes a very enthusiastic female quartet).

First up were Brothers, a bearded trio (siblings? fans of The Black Keys? both?). Their songs were long, often multi structured with heavy bass lines and played well. To these ears on most songs they sounded like a heavier Tame Impala. GG’s favourite band of the evening.

Painting Rockets were fronted by an energetic female vocalist with a penchant for dropping to her knees mid song, like a rockier but less theatrical James Brown. She was backed ably by a guitarist, a drummer and a dreadlocked white bassist in a White Lies t-shirt. Their rock songs did cover a range of styles and whilst they had some good songs they perhaps need a more defined sound/style.

Take Today were a decent heavy rock quartet – with both guitarists doing some lead vocal duty. They saved their best song for last, complete with crowd pleasing woah-oh-ohs.

Ikari were another rock quartet: voc/gui + gui/bvoc + bs/bvoc + dr. In one song they even did a visual  Staus Quo homage, with all three guitarists striking a stance in a line across the stage. On FaceBook they describe themselves as Post-hardcore but to these ears (other than the first very heavy song) they sounded more like melodic heavy rock.
