FOUR TO THE FLOOR

Where: King Tut’s
When: 14 January 2018
Support: Plastic Poetry; Pretty Villain; The Vanities

This was part of the ‘King Tut’s New Year’s Revolution 2018’ where the venue showcases the Scotland’s best emerging artists’ over 16 days. Tonight there were 4 bands. The nature of these night is that the crowd, other than a small core, tends to change with each band as family and friends turn up to support just their guys.

First up were The Vanities, a teenage four piece playing vigorous garage rock including a cover of ‘Twist and Shout’. They were followed by Pretty Villain who seem to be heavily influenced by the music coming out of North-West England in the late 1980s/1990s (alright by me!), from the frontman’s Liam Gallagher influenced style to the Stone Roses like bent of much of their music. My favourite band of the evening, and the most sophisticated musically and lyrically, were Plastic Poetry, whose alternative rock at times came tinged with psychedelia.

The headliners were Sway, another young four-piece band. They played jangly, slightly distorted rock with a swagger and confidence that reflected the experience gained from their hard gigging. And they know the befit of having a good chorus. They also seem to have absorbed many different musical influences, including if I am not mistaken The Hold Steady (Sway ‘Haven’ riff/ THS ‘Lord I’m Discouraged’). Their energetic set was enjoyed by the largest crowd of the evening and sent us away with a smile on our face.
