THE KINGS VISIT THE KING

Where: King Tut’s
When: 30 January 2018
Support: Aivis; Gravelle; Tiny Murder

Tiny Murder played a very short set and GG arrived a little bit late and only caught their last song of this trio (female voc/keys – gui – dr) – sorry guys – but liked it enough that I hope to catch them again sometime. [Later I realized I had seen their first ever gig – which was just the female singer with her keys – supporting Froth at The Hug and Pint in June and was impressed by her interesting songs]

The duo Gravelle were the most interesting band of the night – male vocal/guitar/beats and female vocal/beats. They played a sort of electro punk, often with prominent angry guitar, that reminded GG early 80s electro etc like pre-Dare Human League, Soft Cell (in the dirty electro sounds), Joy Division, and even Siouxsie and The Banshees. I really enjoyed it but let the girl sing more!

Aivis were another, but very different, duo – or rather main vocalist plus a backing singer with the music provided an unmanned laptop. Pop with a torch song leaning dominated and the main singer gave his all in entertaining manner. They had the largest crowd, with some very enthusiastic supporters, nearly all of whom left after their set.

They should have stayed for Alvarez Kings, who did draw decent sized audience for almost 11pm on a wet Tuesday night. A classic set up (voc/gui – bass/korg, straight out of the Adam Clayton school of bass players – gui/keys/b voc – dr) matched with a bunch of classic rock songs delivered professionally and with gusto. As one punter said they really did deserve a larger crowd. They did one number acoustically in among the crowd – just the vocalist on acoustic guitar and the guitar player providing backing vocals – and their harmonies on this were a highlight of their set. Also, kudos to the band for giving a shout out to King Tut’s as the venue that treats the bands the best. They are probably one good song getting some airplay or a good festival appearance from moving up to the next level.
