Bubbilicious!

When: 11 September 2018
Where: Broadcast
Support: Freakwave; Yung KP

Another grey wet Glasgow evening, another evening in the dingy sparsely populated Broadcast basement. But the ten punters who stayed around for main act Tokyo Taboo were treated to a dayglo show of bright, glitzy uplifting pop punk rock. Front and centre was vocalist Dolly Daggerz who, from her 70s silver glam platform shoes up, was everything you want from a pop punk princess and whose vocals throughout were great. Her energy was infectious, lighting up the dingy venue and putting smiles on the faces of the audience. And several times she descended into the audience. Best moment – Dolly in the audience, perched atop a small table, stomping with abandon while said table wobbled precariously – priceless!

No less enthusiastic was guitarist, and band’s other mainstay, Mike. Looking like the bigger brasher brother of that guy from the ‘Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)’ video, he threw rock shapes and poses with glee but beneath the humour his guitar playing was muscular and serious, with some great, catchy riffs. The rhythm section offered strong support and overall the band were a blast and deserved a far bigger crowd.

[And they definitely didn’t deserve to get a smaller crowd than support band Freakwave – why didn’t the latter’s friends and family hang around for the main show – it was their loss that they didn’t. I try not to be negative in these reviews but this is one thing that bugs me and I have experienced several times in Glasgow, and something I didn’t really experience in London – the lack of support for the main band by the support bands’ supporters!]
