High Five Ms. Raabe!

When: 7 November 2018
Where: O2 Academy
Support: Oli Fox
Band Previously Seen: 21 March 2018, Saint Luke’s

A relatively quick return to Glasgow for Norwegian songstress Sigrid – and as I predicted in my review of her March gig she is playing a much bigger venue moving up from the 350 person venue to (almost  sold out) 2,500 O2 Academy. One of the reasons for seeing her gain so soon was to see how she managed the move up to the larger venue and am pleased to say that she did it with ease. It was another joyous, lively pop performance that the crowd loved.

She was still in jeans and top but the look was more sophisticated than when I saw her 6 months ago at Saint Luke’s – all in black, sharper jeans, top avec glitter – but she still retained her freshness and has that ‘girl next door’ feel that makes it so easy to communicate to the teenage girls who dominate the audience. She still hasn’t produced an album but has enough good songs to ensure a good setlist that never flags – which is one clue as to why she has racked up so many awards and award nominations over the last two years. It is also a well constructed set list – she starts with latest single ‘Sucker Punch’, ends the main set with her breakthrough ‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’, and the final encore is her biggest hit and best song to date ‘Strangers’. She also handled the couple of relatively slower numbers well, especially ‘Raw’ whose live rendition was better than the recorded one.  On Wikipedia it says that her childhood influences were Joni Mitchell, Adele and Neil Young but it is difficult to find that in her music which is confident electro influenced dance pop – a better guide to where her musical head is at is given by her ‘under the radar’ picks for BBC music.

Overall the gig was a hugely enjoyable and it will be interesting to see what Sigrid does next.
