ON THE BOOM

When: 16 November 2018
Where: Stereo
Support:
Band Previously Seen: 21 August 2017

Tricot delivered possibly my favourite gig of last year and tonight they gave one the best gigs I have seen in 2018. They are one of the best bands around at the moment: their recorded output is great and live there are not many bands who can currently touch them for musicianship and sheer verve. Guitar rock with a huge dollop of fun and invention (in Japanese!).

The core female trio of Ikkyu Nakajima (voc/gui), Hiromi Sagane (bs/bvoc) and Motoko Kida (gui/voc) have now been joined permanently by the adroit male drummer Yuusuke Yoshida. The band is a powerhouse who deliver complex music draped in a sugar-coating of pop and I particularly like guitarist Motoko Kida – a fantastic musician and great fun stage presence, with all the rock guitarist tricks. They didn’t play my favourite song (the incorrigible ‘Bakuretsu Panie San’) but the setlist didn’t have a dud song. And most of tonight’s songs are fairly new and several are to be found on their latest album (‘3’) – the songs are probably getting a bit more ‘mainstream’ but they still have a clear ‘math rock’ dna (although with none of the seriousness or earnestness that often goes with that tag).

Last year Tricot played to about 60 people in Broadcast’s slightly dingy basement but tonight they play to about double that in the more welcoming environment of Stereo -perhaps next time they will play an even bigger venue (perhaps The Art School?). Do yourself a favour – if you get the chance, go see them live.
