DREAMING, NOT SLEEPING

When: 15 November 2018
Where: Saint Luke’s
Support: Fiskur

WWPJ are one of the many very good Scottish indie rock bands and one of the best – if only we had more than four albums in ten years to enjoy. Not surprisingly the show is sold out. The setting is dramatic: the band are dwarfed by the huge WWPJ banner hanging behind them and which the lighting highlights, giving the band members a starker look, in keeping with the lyrics of many of the songs and helping to emphasise their often loud-quiet dynamics. It is on nights like this that Saint Luke’s comes into its own.

Tonight the band are excellent – Adam Thompson (vocals, guitar) is in fine voice and the rest of the band provide muscular support (particularly enjoyed Darren Lackie’s drumming). The set is dominated by songs from the latest album, The More I Sleep, The Less I Dream, with the nearly all the other songs coming from the first two albums. It is the latter which get the biggest reactions, songs like ‘Human Error’, ‘Boy in the Backseat’ and of course ‘Its Thunder and Lightning’. But some of the best songs tonight are from the new album – ‘Someone Else’s Problem’ and ‘Hanging In’. WWPJ are one of those bands who eschew the theatrics of the encore (and tell us so) but they end with my favourite tune of the night (and included on the new album, as others have noted it surprisingly shares some dna with bands like Everything, Everything!),  ‘Repeating Patterns’ (sees sample video).

It is an exhilarating night and the band serve up a exciting, memorable set which left the crowd mightily pleased.
