LIVE AT BARROWLANDS!

When: 9 March 2019

Where: Barrowland

Support: $au$age$; Laurel

Band Previously Seen: 30 Oct 2007 Roundhouse, London; 8 Mar 2011 Forum, London

This was a good-natured gig – the band seemed relaxed and happy and the audience were here to enjoy themselves and pay homage to one of their own. We had been buoyed up by two good but contrasting support acts. And then came the main event – KT (avec silver trews) was in her element, as always quite talkative on stage, confidently engaging the audience in banter and embarrassing her band members when introducing them by giving a shout out to their mothers who were in the crowd.

We got at least one song from her various albums with almost half the set being songs from the new album Wax. The latter generally had a rockier, harder edge than the recorded versions, not least ‘The River’ which on YouTube is a glossy video exercise in modern pop complete with KT and sexy male dancer (a long way from t-shirt, pink skirt and boots on Jools!). That harder rockier edge was provided by her excellent all female band (guitar, bass, drums, keys) – drummer Cat Myers being especially impressive.

The set highlights were ‘Feel It All’ (see sample video below), ‘Push That Knot Away’, ‘The Healer’ and (inevitably) ‘Black Horse and the Cherry Tree’ (with extra ‘Black Betty’!). The encore included a cover of Belinda Carlisle’s ‘Heaven is a Place on Earth’ – not my cup of tea but the crowd enjoyed it. And the other set highlight was the boisterous lovely crowd.

The gig was recorded live and can be bought from here.
