BACK IN TIME FOR BIG WOWS

When: 25 April 2019

Where: Broadcast

Support: Hyyts

Band Previously Seen: 9/12/15 supporting Django Django at Roundhouse, London

The spirit of 1980s electro synth pop is alive and well in the 21st century and one of the best keepers of the flame is female trio Stealing Sheep. I saw them four years ago supporting Django Django at the 3,000 capacity and really enjoyed their set. And now here there are playing the 180 capacity [really?] basement of Broadcast and they have come on leaps and bounds.

The venue has sold out which is great for the band but perhaps a bit disappointing for punters as the barely raised stage meant that most of us could barely see the band. This was a pity as their colourful stage show is an important part of their act. I had to be content with an occasional glimpse of a shimmering gold jumpsuit or a colourful face in shades.

But even if my view was restricted I was not disappointed too much as the real star was the music – the bubbling synths, oh so English pop female vocals, and its both retro and futuristic leanings. The whole set was a real delight with great, playful contributions from all three musicians (Lucy Mercer on drums, Becky Hawsley on keys and bassist Emily Lansley – all on vocals).

The set is dominated by new album Big Wows and the dayglo videos that accompany it percolate through to this evening. In an interview with The Skinny Becky said that “Big Wows means don’t stress it … when the paraphernalia of the internet is all around you, and it feels as if it’s getting to you and becoming quite hectic, the best approach is to remain chilled, and keep it light-hearted.” Which neatly sums up this evening – a stress-free, light-hearted, chilled but eminently danceable experience. Please come back soon!

Finally, shout out to support act Hyyts – who said they’d only learnt of the gig that morning – who gave a rousing soulful electro disco set (plus Shania Twain cover). You can see them again this weekend at the Stag and Dagger Festival .
