First an appreciative nod to support act NSTT – her rapping was strong and her minimalist dance moves a joy. A good start to the evening that got the small but committed crowd in the mood for the main event.
Oshun are New Yorkers Niambi Sala and Thandiwe, tonight ably backed by their producer on beats duty, who deal in sweet hip-hop/soul Afrofuturism.
They welcome us into the Oshuniverse and we gladly follow. Their singing and rapping mirrors their lyrical exhortations of empowerment, peace and love. And the music swings gently, getting the crowd’s feet moving.
You wouldn’t know we were in a slightly dingy Glasgow pub basement, where outside the evening had already experienced one downpour. Instead the pervading atmosphere is the warm glow that emanates from the stage. They should go down well when they play Glastonbury this summer.
